About Newm's Art Stop

I started sharing New Orleans art in 2021. I moved here in 2020 from Knoxville in East Tennessee where I'm from. I was patient in letting the aesthetic of this work come to me, and I found it the day I made my first attempt at a watercolor painting of Gene's PoBoy. My first place here was a corner store apartment/studio in St. Roch at Arts & Johnson. I was waiting tables at Ruby Slipper in the CBD and would bike past the Gene's building everyday on my way to work. Of course, I wanted to have experienced Gene's firsthand, but I took the advice of a someone I met shortly after moving here. They said, "Take what the city gives you, love it, and it will love you back." So I took what I was given in the joy of seeing that pink building everyday, and I chose to paint it. Soon after it was repainted and new tenants took up its space.

From there, the collection began to grow and new techniques found their way into my line and wash style illustrations of the places and things I liked about the city. In 2023, I came up with the name "Newm's Art Stop" with the idea and a chuckle of incorporating my decade plus time spent in the service industry offering delivery service, home portraiture, and other hospitality artifacts into this art practice. I made the sign and hung it above the steps of our apartment, and it became real.

I began participating in local markets, sharing the work on socials, and the New Orleans subreddit. It's through the Art Stop I have found the best way for me to interact, learn, and grow with this city and its people. And more importantly, to be a part of the give & take while loving this city & letting it love me back.
